First aid in New Zealand: what to know
Our guides follow the Australian (ANZCOR) guidelines. CPR is the same everywhere โ 30 compressions to 2 breaths at 100โ120 per minute, and use a defibrillator as soon as one arrives โ but training in New Zealand differs in a few places worth knowing.
- Guidelines
- New Zealand Resuscitation Council (ANZCOR guidelines) โ the same guidelines our knowledge base is written to.
- Choking
- For a conscious adult or child who cannot cough, breathe or speak: up to 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades, then up to 5 chest thrusts, repeating until the blockage clears. Abdominal thrusts are not taught.
- Defibrillators
- Public AEDs are mapped on AED Locations (aedlocations.co.nz); Hato Hone St John uses the GoodSAM responder app.
- New Zealand and Australia share the ANZCOR guidelines, so our guides match local training apart from the emergency number (111).
